So you have decided to pop the question to your ladylove and you are looking for the perfect engagement ring. Well, why not purchase a diamond ring? Diamonds signify steadfast, everlasting love because of their unmatched strength and beauty and diamond engagement rings are the most popular accompaniment to popping the question.
Well, buying a diamond engagement ring is going to be an important decision and without the right guidance or research, you might end up spending an exorbitant amount. The first thing to know is that there are diamonds available to match all budgets, it is not necessary that a diamond engagement ring is always super expensive. The purpose of this guide is to make the decision simpler and to ensure that you get value for your money.
DECIDE YOUR BUDGET
There is a wide array of choices available when it comes to selecting a diamond. So, it will help to have an estimate of how much you would like to spend. Then, allocate your budget into two parts – one for the centre diamond or solitaire and the other for the ring mount (plain mount or with side diamonds or other gemstones). It would help to look at a few designs first to decide what kind of a ring you want so that you can allocate your budget accordingly.
WHAT KIND OF JEWELLERY DOES SHE LIKE? WHAT SOLITAIRE SHAPE DOES SHE PREFER?
If she hasn’t made it easy for you by already voicing an opinion on the subject (or admiring someone else’s engagement ring), here are a few things to keep in mind:
Does she prefer classic jewellery or modern jewellery? Does she like white gold, yellow gold or rose gold jewellery? Do her pieces tend to be more delicate or chunky? What solitaire shape does she prefer? The most popular diamond shape is Round but perhaps she prefers something else. She will be wearing this ring everyday so having these preferences in mind will help you to select the perfect engagement ring. Shortlist a few options before you start looking for the centre diamond. You can check some engagement ring designs here.
LEARN ABOUT DIAMONDS
After you have shortlisted a few designs, now it’s time to start researching on diamonds so that you can pick the perfect diamond. Understand the diamond 4C’s and how they can impact the price of a diamond. Learn how to select the perfect diamond color so you do not overspend. Cut is the most important factor and it will impact how the diamond looks to you visually. Hence, I recommend going for an ‘Excellent’ or atleast a ‘Very Good’ cut, by compromising on other diamond parameters if needed. Also, my recommendation is that you buy either a GIA or IGI certified diamond only – GIA is an industry standard worldwide and IGI is quite popular in India. Some more tips here.
SELECTING THE PERFECT DIAMOND
Once you have chosen the design and the diamond shape, you can start looking at diamond options to understand what quality and carat weight diamond is available within your budget. A traditional jewellery retailer might have limited options and you will be forced to choose something that might not be the best option available in your budget. You can look at more than 130,000 best priced diamond options here. Once you have an idea of the diamond prices, you can start narrowing down the list based on your preferences and research. FIND OUT HER RING SIZE
If she wears rings, borrow one she already owns and find out the size. Ask her family or best friend. Getting the correct size for the right finger is important so that the engagement ring you purchase fits her perfectly. Minor re-sizing can be made later, in case it doesn’t fit well. It’s always better to buy a ring a bit bigger than you think she’ll need, because sizing a ring down is much easier than increasing its size.
SELECTING THE RING
So you have selected the centre diamond, know her ring size and have shortlisted a few designs. Now, it’s time to finalize the ring design. Keep in mind her preferences, what she would like to wear everyday, whether she would like a single stone ring or something bigger with side diamonds. If you select a ring with side diamonds, my advice is that the color of the side diamonds should be lower or same as the centre diamond so as to highlight the centre diamond. Ask for proper certificates for the solitaire as well as the ring mount. You may consider buying insurance for the ring as well.
Finally, pick the perfect moment and place to pop the question and surprise her – all the time, effort and money you have spent on the engagement ring will be worth it when you see the look on her face!!
